Slentrol: Weight Loss in Dogs

Pfizer has recently released a new product for weight loss in dogs. Slentrol is taken daily by mouth, and in the studies performed during the trials of the drug, found an overwhelming response to the medication. Slentrol is an oil-based liquid that interferes with the absorption of fats. However, as opposed to human products restricting fat absorption, greasy stools are not a problem. By restricting fat absorption, your pet feels full and eats less. In the field trial of Slentrol, almost all of the dogs lost weight, averaging 3% weight loss each month while on the medication.

Obesity in pets is becoming a greater issue each year. As our pets age, gaining marked amounts of weight is truly harmful to the kidneys, and the heart. Obesity worsens disease processes such as osteoarthritis of the major joints, such as the hips, the knees, and the "wrist" joints (carpus and tarsus). When a dog with painful joints loses weight, one sees an almost immediate response.

There are many causes of weight gain in pets, including diminished thyroid hormone production (hypothyroidism) and alterations in cortisol production (Cushing’s Disease). It is important to identify endocrine abnormalities before a dog is placed on Slentrol.

Cats must not be placed on Slentrol.
