New blood Marker for Detecting Pancreatic Disease
in the Cat

One of the more frustrating disease states in the cat is attempting to make an accurate diagnosis for the vomiting and "not feeling well" kitty cat. There are always a number of possibilities and, in some cases, treatments are vastly different. Now Idexx Labs has released a test that is specific for acute pancreatic disease in the cat. This new test, feline Pancreatic specific Lipase, measures the levels of the lipase in the bloodstream. When the pancreas is inflamed, lipase is being released into the blood instead of into the small intestine as it normally would. High levels of fPL helps the clinician discern between pancreatic disease and all of the others. Pancreatic disease, in both the dog and cat, can be life-threatening; early diagnosis is critically important.
